When I was a bodybuilder, I ate the same 10 foods weekly, which was much unhealthier than people would otherwise think because I looked fit, trim and toned. Do we do the same 10 exercises every week? NO And if you do, we need to talk, because you’re not getting any closer to your dream body that way. So…why don’t we apply the same logic to what we put in our mouth?

I don’t have any allergies, so is this test for me?
YES, absolutely! Allergies vs Food Intolerances & Sensitivities are completely different. You likely have been tested before for the most common 8 allergies. Most times, you won’t need to be tested, your body TELLS you immediately! It gets a bit tricky with foods your body isn’t stoked about digesting. I’ll use the Frog in Hot water analogy again. Put a frog in boiling water and they’ll feel it and jump out. Aka – you KNOW you’re allergic to a food, it’s obvious, you react immediately, so you stay away from it. Put a frog in cool water and slowly turn up the heat and the frog will die slowly, not feeling a thing. Aka – you have no idea the slow, silent and subtle demise foods you’re sensitive to cause on the inside, so you keep eating them, passing it off as ‘getting older’ or ‘just being born this way’. In a nutshell: Food sensitivities are DELAYED food allergies that go unnoticed, and can be even MORE offensive to the body!

Another one that BLEW me away. Tyramine…it naturally occurs in our body and and is also produced in foods and beverages as a result of fermentation, aging, or spoilage. Tyramine is important because it can affect blood pressure. Examples of foods that contain high amounts of tyramine include aged cheese, soy sauce, aged meats, pickled fish, tofu (soy curd), sauerkraut, tap beer, fermented foods, or even something as minor as a ripe banana are rich in tyramine. SIDE NOTE: People who take a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) aka anti-depressant (25% of Californians), need to avoid consuming foods high in tyramine because it causes a dangerous increase in blood pressure when combined with MAOIs. Crazy huh? I find it ironic that my mother suffers migraines and high blood pressure, which is characteristic of a Tyramine Food Insensitivity….so we’re testing her next to see if we can alleviate these conditions for her and get her off her meds. Eating the same foods repeatedly can cause these sensitivities, but the main factor is GENETICS. Perhaps I inherited this Tyramine sensitivity from her. Hmm…..

Food & Chemical Sensitivities
Food and chemical sensitivities can result in an immune system reaction with the release of bad guys, called ‘Mediators’. The immune system has a first line of defense in which it identifies “self” and “non-self.” This is very beneficial for protecting us from unwanted bacteria and viruses. However, if the immune system interprets a food or chemical as ‘dangerous…DESTROY!’, the result is the release of mediators which cause inflammation and pain. This is how food and chemical sensitivities develop. Many chronic conditions may be made worse by food and chemical sensitivities. Below is an expansion of symptoms that are often associated with food and chemical sensitivities:

Once I start the LEAP diet, how long will it take before I notice results?
Most patients see a noticeable difference within the first 1-2 weeks on the program. However, in some cases it can take as long as 4-6. Your particular response may vary depending on certain factors:
- How closely you follow your LEAP Plan. Follow it to the T = feel better, sooner. Follow it loosely = take longer to feel better. Out of all the factors, your compliance bears the greatest influence on your relief.
- How long you’ve been suffering your conditions. It could take longer to reverse the damage caused by years of sensitivity reactions, improper eating and/or inadequate nutrition.
- The degree to which food sensitivity plays a role in your condition. You might experience total symptom relief from your condition as long as you stay on your plan. Others might see a decrease in symptoms but not complete remission. Why? Food sensitivity can either be the direct cause OR a contributing factor to your health problem.
How often do I need to take this test?
Ideally, only once! On rare occasion, I may suggest you repeat.
My story on WHY and how I came to offer this testing?
I’ll never forget the first time I turned to natural healing methods as a manner in which to treat symptoms I was experiencing. I sought out a naturopath in 2009 as my best friend raved about hers in Hawaii. I made the apt, and swallowed my pride as I was paying out of pocket for health care for the first time, but believed in my heart it was the RIGHT thing to do to TRULY HEAL my body. I paid the $150 for my 60 minutes, walked in and told her I wanted advice transitioning off of the Depo Provera Birth Control shots I had maintained for 7 years. I read forums on the internet of the importance of supporting your body emotionally and biologically upon a hormone shift as drastic as this, and I wanted to do it right the FIRST time. Although she was a very nice doctor, the advice I got for my $150 was nothing short of generics I had already come across: “Eat healthy fats at every meal & take 1 gram of EPA-DHA Fish Oil daily”
Disappointed that there was nothing customized about her advice, I remembered hearing something about the importance of understanding our body’s response to foods, and at the time, the only testing I knew of was ALCAT…so I asked if she offered it. “ALCAT? What’s that?” was her response. I was FLOORED. After explaining, she checked with her staff and turned out they had boxes of it at her office…but I wasn’t convinced she was the person I would explore this with.
